AIDSLaw of Louisiana, Inc. is a Louisiana not-for-profit corporation formed in 1989 to provide free legal services to low-income persons living with HIV and AIDS. AIDSLaw is the only organization in the state dedicated to addressing the legal needs of the affected community.

AIDSLaw believes that people affected by HIV/AIDS have the right to legal services that are appropriate and responsive to their individual needs and those of their loved ones. AIDSLaw is committed to enhancing the control people affected by HIV.AIDS disease have over their own lives, and to improving their access to legal services and the legal system.

Pro Bono Awards

Like all non-profits, AIDSLaw depends on the help of people who are interested in its mission. AIDSLaw started 18 years ago as a volunteer organization, and it is a simple fact that even today the job could not be done without those who have donated their time and skills over the years, and who continue to do so today.

To recognize these efforts, in 1995 AIDSLaw instituted the Pro Bono Publico Awards as its highest honor for service to AIDSLaw and the affected community. The awards honor those individuals who have given their time and talents to advance and protect the legal rights of people living with HIV and AIDS.

In addition, in 1997 AIDSLAw created the Teri Estrada Memorial Award as a community service award to recognize people working on the front lines in the battle against the disease. Teri was a staff attorney AIDSLaw who died from AIDS in 1994. Her work and devotion are an inspiration to everyone who works with the affected community.
